School Nurse

10 Month Exempt Position

 

Starting in August 2026


REPORTS TO: Principal


PURPOSE: The professional school nurse is responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating school health services within Swain County Schools.  Under limited supervision, performs a variety of professional work to assist in the coordination of activities of the Student Support Services Department. Work involves function as a consultant to schools and ensuring the implementation of required policies and procedures affecting students physical and mental wellness. Employee is responsible for reviewing, managing, maintaining, and communicating with the school administration regarding school health program and practice issues, state-mandated compliance issues, requirements, etc. Work is guided by and must be in compliance with federal guidelines, as well as, state statutes and regulations. Employee must exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative in the performance of assignments.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES


• Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local policies and procedures regarding School Nursing
• Considerable knowledge of current trends, publications, research and laws pertaining to HIPPA and FERPA.
• Ability to maintain complete and accurate confidential records and statistics and to develop meaningful reports from that information
• Ability to implement appropriate programs for School Nursing
• Ability to assess the effectiveness of programs and activities
• Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing
• Ability to make oral presentations before large groups of people
• Ability to use a computer and current word processing programs, create spreadsheets, and access online tools
• Ability to navigate online tools such as Powerschool, etc.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
• Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Nursing (or other Bachelor of Science degree accepted by National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN).

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
• Registered Nurse with current Licensure with NC Board of Nursing (NCBON).
• National Certification as a school nurse (within 3 years of hire date).
• Current CPR/First Aid Certification
• Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Five (5) years of experience serving as a School Nurse in a public-school setting
• Spanish Speaking
